How to Measure Yourself for a Custom Prom Dress: A Step-by-Step Guide
Posted by Emily Anne on
Why Custom Sizing Makes All the Difference
Off-the-rack prom dresses rarely fit perfectly. That's why ordering a custom-size prom dress is the smartest choice you can make. At Anneprom, every dress is made to your exact measurements β so you can walk into prom night feeling confident, comfortable, and completely yourself.
Here's exactly how to measure yourself at home for the perfect fit.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape (not a metal ruler)
- A friend to help (measurements are more accurate with assistance)
- A well-fitting bra or strapless bra (wear what you plan to wear under the dress)
- A notepad to record your measurements
Step 1: Bust Measurement
Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it parallel to the floor. Don't pull it too tight β you should be able to slip two fingers underneath. Record this number in inches or centimeters.
Step 2: Waist Measurement
Find your natural waist β it's the narrowest part of your torso, usually about an inch above your belly button. Wrap the tape around this point and record the measurement. Stand naturally and don't suck in!
Step 3: Hip Measurement
Stand with your feet together and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and seat, usually about 7β9 inches below your natural waist. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
Step 4: Height
Stand barefoot against a wall and measure from the top of your head to the floor. This helps us determine the correct dress length, especially for long prom dresses with court trains.
Step 5: Hollow to Floor
This is the most important measurement for long dresses. Measure from the hollow at the base of your throat (the small dip between your collarbones) straight down to the floor while standing barefoot. This ensures your dress hem hits at exactly the right length.
Tips for Accurate Measurements
- Measure twice, order once β double-check every measurement before submitting
- Wear the shoes you plan to wear to prom when taking your hollow-to-floor measurement
- If you're between sizes, size up β it's easier to take a dress in than to let it out
- Order at least 6β8 weeks before prom to allow time for production and shipping
Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid
- Measuring over bulky clothing β always measure in fitted undergarments
- Pulling the tape too tight β you need room to breathe and move
- Forgetting to measure height β this affects the overall length of your dress
